BACKGROUND
The Tanzania Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) is an independent national oversight institution for protection and promotion of human rights and good governance in Tanzania.
It was established under Article 129(1) of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977 as amended by Act No. 3 of 2000. The Commission became fully operational on 1st July, 2001 after coming into force of the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance Act, Cap. 391 and Government Notice, No. 311 of 8th June, 2001.
The Commission was officially inaugurated on 15th March, 2002 following the appointment of Commissioners by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Coverage of Services
CHRAGG provides its services to all 26 regions in Mainland Tanzania and five (5) regions in Zanzibar through its head office based in Dodoma and a branch office in Zanzibar; as well as through its zonal offices located in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Lindi and Pemba. CHRAGG endeavours to bring its services closer to the people by opening more offices in the country.
Partnership
We believe in the old maxim, “united we stand, divided we fall.” One of the CHRAGG’s major preoccupations is networking. We believe that most of the human rights issues in Tanzania can effectively be dealt with only if there is effective collaboration among stakeholders. So far CHRAGG has signed collaboration agreements with 30 NGOs in the delivery of human rights and good governance education in the country. Effective Networking entails not only sharing of ideas and experiences among stakeholders, but also being able to share some of the most basic and important resources required to fulfil our shared goals.
